The Modern Skeptic by GA Chesterton

The new rebel is a skeptic, and will not entirely trust anything.
He has no loyalty, therefore he can never be a true rebelutionist. And that fact that he doubts everything gets in his way when he wants to denounce anything. For all denunciation implies a moral doctrine of some kind, and the modern rebelutionist doubts not only the institution he denounces, but the doctrine by which he denounces it...
As a politician he cries out that war is a waste of life, then as a philosopher that life itself is a waste of time.
A Russian pessimist will denounce a policeman for killing a peasant, then prove by the highest philosophical principles that the peasant ought to have killed himself.
A man denounces marriage as a lie, then denounces aristocratic profligates for treating it as a lie.
A man goes first into a political meeting where he complains that savages are treated as if they were beasts, then takes his hat and umbrella and goes into a scientific meeting, where he proves that they practically are beasts.
In short, the modern revolutionist, being an infinite skeptic, is always engaged in undermining his own mind.
In his book on politics, he attacks men for trampling on morality. In his book on ethics, he attacks morality for trampling on men.
Therefore the modern man in revolt has become practically useless for all purposes of revolt. By rebelling against everything, he has lost his right to rebel against anything.

And THAT should give you enough to think about for the rest of the day :)

Do I know 365 people?

"The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."

A righteous girl's prayer I assume is the same:) I don't remember to pray for others nearly as often as I should. But I want to remember people in general prayer, and of course I want other people to remember to randomly pray for me! So here is my solutionful idea: I'm going to get one of those little pocket calendars (or whatever they're called) and write the names of people I know on each day of the month every month. I want to do someone different every day, but probably each family member will have a monthly pray-day. And I'll probably have a "look up a random name in the phonebook" pray-day, and I'll leave a few days blank to fill in with people I have just met. That will probably, as a side note, help me remember names and faces of people I meet. And you know, praying for people you don't know/don't know very well really helps take the focus off ME, ME, ME. Like try praying for one of those bikers that you drive by for half a second. Mom says she always prays for people with crummy cars:P
So, what do you think? I'm looking forward to it! I think it's going to be a lot of fun. But since I don't have one yet, I'm going to go look up a random name in the phonebook. Just a minute... ok, the name is John Grinstead. So today, let us say a quick prayer that John Grinstead will have a great day and that God will help him with whatever problem he may have at this time. After all... God knows John Grinstead, right?

A Poetic Visual

"The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day."

When I read this, I pictured a good sunrise. Getting up at 5 in the morning when it's still pitch dark and driving is a good way to see one. You're in the car, then it starts to get barely lighter. You still can't see the sun, then suddenly it peeks over the horizon, sending light all around. As it rises it get steadily brighter until everything is bright and you pull out your sunglasses.

You don't usually think of the path of the righteous that way. But when you visualize it, it becomes a lot clearer. When you go along the good path more and more people see what you're doing, and the path gets brighter as the world grows darker, until that path eventually leads to our ultimate goal.

Anyone wanna go for a hike?

"Let's make some humans!"

I was listening to a comedy podcast this morning, and they played a clip from a black artist from the 80s who said thus (and I use a little black lingo):

"You know, I just imagine the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in heaven at the beginning of time ya know? They just hangin out, and they say, "Well, what ya'll wanna do?"

And they say, "Well - let's make some humans!"

And the Father and the Spirit look at each other and they look at Jesus and say, "Now, man, you know if we make some humans what's gonna happen? You gonna have to go to earth, take on one of them funny-lookin bodies, people are gonna spit on you, curse you, call you all kinda names, and eventually nail you to da cross."

And he said, "Father, that's alright! Because as I look down through time I can see people on planet earth, enjoying abundant life! As I look further, I can see people - men, women, boys and girls, at the end of the age from every nation, from every tribe, from every tongue, coming up from the face of the earth! I can see 'em Father, with their arms raised standing all around our throne sayin, "Blessed be the lamb that was slain for the whole world!' I can see em Father, standing there, with their new bodies, bodies that will never suffer pain or die again. It's worth it! Let's make some humans!"
